Wine Legislation in Italy: Geographical Indications, Oenological Practices and the Impact of European Reform

This collective volume offers a comprehensive and scientifically rigorous overview of the legal framework governing the wine sector, at both European and national levels.

At a time of profound regulatory transformation—shaped by the reform of geographical indications, the implementation of the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) 2023–2027, and the modernization of oenological and labeling standards—the wine industry emerges not only as a strategic economic sector but also as a complex legal field. It sits at the intersection of agricultural law, food law, sustainability policies, and intellectual property, making it an ideal vantage point from which to analyze broader developments in European integration.

The book is structured in two parts. The first is devoted to the European Union legal framework, examining the most recent legislative reforms and delegated acts: the revised system of geographical indications (GIs), the new regime of traditional specialities guaranteed (TSGs), the use of GI ingredients in processed foods, electronic labeling and traceability requirements, and the incorporation of OIV resolutions into EU law. Particular attention is given to the growing role of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and the new certification and market access rules for wine products.

The second part addresses the Italian legal system, exploring the national implementation of EU wine law. Topics include the civil law framework of agricultural land loans and agrivoltaic installations, the fiscal treatment of multifunctional farming practices, the CAP strategic plan and its implications for the wine sector, and the legal classification of ancillary agricultural activities with a focus on wine production.
